Here you will find a list of modem models, including a ‘Legacy’ option for end-of-life and no-longer-supported products and a ”Services” option for Maxon supplied value added services.
Enter the appropriate folder for the modem you want updates for and you will find another series of folders appropriately named – for example in the “Intellimax+ - MA-2020” folder you will find the following folders:
Each one contains the appropriate files – eg. in the “Applications Notes” folder of Intellimax+ - MA-2020 you will find Intellimax+ Modem Emulation V 4.1.pdf which explains the setup and operation of the modem emulation function.
Because these files can be updated directly by the support staff at Maxon, we can add to this at any time. So if you can’t find something and call the support staff, we can add it during the phone call! We may also provide you with a link to an unbrowsable folder on the same server if we need to send you confidential information or advanced/customised versions of firmware for you to evaluate or test.
While this is currently far from a complete list of all documents we have, it does have the majority of frequently requested files – and as above, we can add to it easily, so the contents will grow over time. Currently, there is over 500MB in more than 180 files/folders on this server to download/browse.

Maxon Australia Ltd, leaders in M2M technology across the Asia Pacific region, today announce a newly formed partnership with New Zealand based distributor Snapper Network Distribution Ltd. This partnership combines Maxon’s M2M development expertise with Snappernet’s highly qualified and ‘hands on’ service and support team.
For the first time in New Zealand, SnapperNet will offer Maxon’s range of modem/routers providing diverse connectivity options. Richard Paul, Managing Director for SnapperNet, says organisations have been looking for the kind of technology solution that Maxon offers for some time now.
“Maxon is a perfect fit to meet our customers’ demands,” he says. “When looking for access to remote devices out of band or needing a failover or main router, they can use Maxon as their complete solution. Our MOBOTIX customers, for example, can connect to their IP cameras using Maxon across 3G or 4G.”
Maxon Australia entered the market in 1989 as a provider of two way and RF data radio technology. In 2004 they released the world’s first USB modem and now focus on 3G and 4G modem and router technologies for both the corporate and industrial markets.

Evaluate the costs versus the long term viability of the options - The most obvious and easiest option is to change carriers to one that still supports 2G if there is geographic coverage. This may seem the most cost effective but we believe it is delaying the inevitable. Eventually other carriers will follow Telstra and also close down their 2G network.
In most cases replacing 2G hardware with 3G hardware is a better long term option, as 3G cellular hardware has such different physical characteristics to 2G that it cannot be simply upgraded through a firmware update. Maxon Australia are a leading provider of M2M equipment. We have been here before and helped many business through the shut down of the CDMA network back in 2003?. Our team are experienced and fully committed in helping our clients through transitions of these kinds and tailoring solutions specific to your business requirements.
Many organisations will be greatly affected by the closing of the 2G network and we have already had a number of them coming to us to ask what they can do to. There are many organisations still purchasing 2G modems today. The major impact to these organisations is in firstly finding an alternative, then implementing the change.
There will be some, who may opt for the easy solution of changing to a different carrier if there is 2G network coverage through and alternative carrier over all sites, (but this isn’t always the case and is also delaying the inevitable). In some unfortunate cases the operator may have gone with an integrated (as opposed to modular) measurement and control solution which may mean that the entire energy meter or RTU has to be replaced at significant cost. If the solution is modular then the modem swap should involve finding an alternative which either already supports all the communication commands required or which can be modified to do so. Maxon has helped a large number of customers with this process in the past through our customisation expertise.
Once a suitable alternative is confirmed the major challenge to these customers is in the physical process of swapping these 2G modems out for 3G alternatives. This will normally involve at a minimum, implementation of a cabling change whereby the old modem cable connections are replaced entirely or an adapter cable is custom manufactured. Maxon has dedicated cable manufacturing both in-house, for smaller volumes and through our manufacturing partners.
The final step, which is often the most painful, is the visits to sites to replace the equipment itself; this can often involve significant man hours and complicated logistics, a costly and time consuming process. As this can often be even more costly than the replacement equipment itself it is crucial to ensure that the replacement is going to do the job well and that the technicians have all the tools they need for the swapout. Maxon has some innovative tools to assist in this process, from customer-specific customisation of software and firmware interfaces to modem emulation, we can ensure that your 2G-3G/4G upgrade path can begin immediately and also be as cost effective as possible.
Another important consideration that many organisations are also currently having to tackle is the migration from Circuit Switched Data (CSD) to IP-based communications. Although Telstra has not indicated a specific date for their CSD network shutdown, they announced back in 2010 that this was going to happen at some stage. The motivations for this is for many of the same reasons 2G is being let go; freeing up network resources from a legacy technology. Our team at Maxon has already assisted a number of both high-profile and owner-operator customers through this process, breaking down the hurdle and providing an elegant and cost-effective solution.
