Downloading new or updated firmware, GUI programs, drivers and application notes for Maxon products just got a lot easier!

Customers can simply point their web browser at:http://support.maxon.com.au/download


Here you will find a list of modem models, including a ‘Legacy’ option for end-of-life and no-longer-supported products and a ”Services” option for Maxon supplied value added services.


Enter the appropriate folder for the modem you want updates for and you will find another series of folders appropriately named – for example in the “Intellimax+ - MA-2020” folder you will find the following folders:


  • Application Notes
  • Firmware
  • GUI
  • Manual


Each one contains the appropriate files – eg. in the “Applications Notes” folder of Intellimax+ - MA-2020 you will find Intellimax+ Modem Emulation V 4.1.pdf which explains the setup and operation of the modem emulation function.


Because these files can be updated directly by the support staff at Maxon, we can add to this at any time. So if you can’t find something and call the support staff, we can add it during the phone call! We may also provide you with a link to an unbrowsable folder on the same server if we need to send you confidential information or advanced/customised versions of firmware for you to evaluate or test.


While this is currently far from a complete list of all documents we have, it does have the majority of frequently requested files – and as above, we can add to it easily, so the contents will grow over time. Currently, there is over 500MB in more than 180 files/folders on this server to download/browse.

RFI will be releasing our new 4G CAT1 version of Maxon’s Intelimax Lite serial modem in April. This will be the first LTE CAT1 modem (with 700 MHz band 28 support) in Australia with a cellular engine that will have approvals from all major carriers in the country.

Site-to-Site VPN.

A Site-to-Site VPN is for connecting a network to maXwan devices, rather than maXvpn which connects a single computer to maXwan devices; therefore, extending the company's network.

Where would you use Site-to-Site VPN?

 
An example of an application in which Site-to-Site VPN would be ideal is a company that manages various water treatment plants. They require information collected from data loggers via sensors at various sites in NSW and QLD - to be transmitted and made available to several different servers for reporting and monitoring.  Each data logger has a maXwan (Fixed IP address) and is part of a subnet; therefore forming one end of the Site-to-Site VPN.  In the image below one server is allocated to NSW, one server is allocated to QLD and the third server is a back up of all data.  Information from the data loggers is transmitted via a router to the applicable servers and multiple users can access and monitor the data loggers as required.  Make an Enquiry

Our client has been using two-way radio to transmit data between car and pit, however this presented a number of issues such as; limited data speeds, occasionally having to install radio communications at each location and requiring a separate licence for each county they were using the devices in.

ABOUT THE APPLICATION

In recent years, data acquisition systems have become powerful tools that are vital to the success of motorsport. These telemetry systems measure and record important vehicle parameters via sensors and are pivotal in communicating track status and warnings between the pit and the driver.

These parameters including; Wheel speeds, Lateral and longitudinal acceleration, Tyre temperatures, Brake pressures, Engine speed (RPM), Engine temperature, Oil pressure and GPS; can be analysed to gain insight into the behaviour of the engine, chassis and driver, which can ultimately result in greater predictability and optimised performance on a race day.

THE SOLUTION

Maxon offered our client the Intelimax serial modem to test in a well known motor racing series held in Australia.

The Intelimax device was easily installed and circumvented the need for setting up receivers and antennas as is the case with RF Data systems. In addition, as FCC approval is already acquired for the Intelimax devices, no additional licences are required.

Once the Intelimax was installed the data speed immediately increased from 38400bps to 115200bps which allowed for faster and more reliable communications.  Using the 3G network improved the privacy of the data being transferred and alleviated any issues of competitors listening in to vital team information.

FUTURE

Our client is very happy with this solution and has plans to roll out Intelimax modems for all other motorsport classes they are involved in such as Formula 1 and V8 Supercars.

Although the 2G network is scheduled to shutdown in 2016, some of our customers have reported to be already affected and are experiencing “grooming” activities implemented by the carriers. Don’t panic! Although the 2G network is shutting down, it doesn’t mean that you have to rip out your old equipment and replace everything. The solution could possibly be a case of upgrading existing communications equipment to a 3G or 4G replacement. In some cases this may also involve utilising a device that can emulate and translate the communications protocols.
